Abstract Scope |
55NiCrMoV7 hot work steel is primarily adopted in the forming industries due to its excellent high temperature hardness, impact toughness and thermal stability at 400°C-550℃. However, these components are always exposed to repetitive heating and cooling cycles that often results in sudden brittle failures due to abrasion and thermal fatigue. Over the years, surface modification technologies have been widely employed to improve the surface properties of hot forging dies. In this study, plasma spray coating of stellite 6 and stellite 12 have been performed on a typical Q&T 55NiCrMoV7 steel. Detail tribological and microstructural characterization has been conducted using ball-on-disk wear testing method and SEM/EDS based analysis. The microstructure of both the coating consists of Co-rich matric with finely decorated carbides (M7C6, M23C6). Both the coating shown higher hardness value compared to the die steel, resulting in higher wear resistance at room and 550⁰ temperature due to stable hard carbide. |
