Abstract Scope |
Additive manufacturing could open new opportunities in the design and fabrication of advanced composites. However, it is difficult to achieve the degree of structural control demanded by many advanced applications. In this presentation we discuss a combination of continuous extrusion and gel casting as a way to build complex structures within dense ceramics. The approach is based on the formulation of a self-healing ceramic gel that enables printing in its interior and heals to form a dense, defect-free ceramic encapsulating the printed structure. We use two model systems (the printing of light, sacrificial graphite arrangements and the introduction of steel structures in alumina) to discuss the conditions required for embedded printing without distortion. We will show how the technique can be used to embed metallic auxetic structures in a ceramic. Their effect on the mechanical properties is assessed using a combination of in-situ testing in the SEM and XCT. |
