Abstract Scope |
We have developed various Infrared (IR) optical materials for numerous potential applications in civil, medical, and military areas. The materials include organic, organic/inorganic hybrid, glass, polycrystalline ceramic and single crystal and they have unique properties suitable for specific applications. Here we report our recent development results on low loss and rugged IR windows based on oxide, sulfide, and other non-oxide ceramics. Progress in the development of low loss IR optical fibers based on silica glass, chalcogenide glass, single crystal, and organic/inorganic hybrid material is also presented. These materials have extremely high chemical and morphological purity requirement and are typically made by a series of synthesis and purification steps. We report various material synthesis, purification, and post-process methods to prepare ultra-high purity materials critically needed to fabricate low loss IR optical materials. The optical, spectral and physical properties as well as the device performance from these IR optical materials are presented. |
