Abstract Scope |
Hydrogen is emerging as an alternative to fossil fuels to reduce carbon footprint. However, materials degradation such as hydrogen embrittlement of metallic materials, and evaporation and dissociation of oxide and non-oxide ceramics and composites, remains a technical challenge to fully utilize the huge potential of hydrogen fuel. Several materials are being investigated as hydrogen barrier coatings for wide range of applications ranging from hydrogen pipelines to environmental barrier coatings for fuel burner nozzles and high-temperature engine components, high temperature clean energy systems, and furnace linings. The presence of water vapor in hydrogen environment usually accelerates the degradation at high temperature. The underlying degradation mechanisms, and various strategies and methods to overcome the materials degradation issues have been reviewed. Advances in hydrogen barrier materials will be presented based on the public domain literatures. The strategies for materials design to resist hydrogen-induced degradation will also be discussed for various application sectors. |
