Abstract Scope |
Transition metal-doped hydroxyapatite (HA), and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) based materials are suitable candidates for bone tissue engineering applications due to their tailored biological properties, and compositional similarities with human hard tissues. Gingerol, the active compound of ginger root and curcumin from turmeric are two important natural medicinal compounds with chemo-preventive potential. In the current work, gingerol and curcumin are incorporated on Mg - Zn doped HA, and TCP to assess the biological properties. Osteoblast cell viability increases up to ~ 1.3 folds on day 11 of cell culture, which can be attributed to the osteogenic potential of each component. The presence of Zn and curcumin show ~ 75% more antibacterial efficacy compared to control after 36 hrs of sample – bacteria interaction. This presentation will discuss the fabrication of the gingerol – curcumin-loaded scaffolds and their anti-bacterial, osteogenic, and chemo-preventive potential for possible applications in patient-specific defect repair sites. |
