Abstract Scope |
Magnetostrictive materials deform in response to a magnetic field and exhibit magnetization under mechanical stress. These properties are essential for creating ultrasonic transducers used in continuous and autonomous structural health monitoring. However, their application in nuclear reactors is limited due to difficulties in sensor manufacturing and integration. Additive manufacturing could resolve these difficulties while slashing waste production and cost. This study presents a comprehensive material extrusion process for additive manufacturing of magnetostrictive terbium-iron-dysprosium (Terfenol-D) thin films. We successfully synthesized Terfenol-D nanoparticles via high-energy ball milling, developed a nanocolloid ink, and applied various post-processing techniques such as thermal sintering, flash sintering, and electric field-assisted sintering. The adhesion strength, material properties, and microstructures of the printed Terfenol-D films were thoroughly evaluated. This research expands the material library for additive manufacturing and provides innovative acoustic sensors for precise structural health monitoring in nuclear reactors. |
