High entropy alloys (HEA) have been the subject of intense research focus in the recent past. Such alloys may consist of a single phase, or two or more phases. In this work, an alloy based on AlMoNbTaTiZr has been studied. The phase transformation pathway was determined, by phase-field modelling, to be congruent ordering of the bcc phase to B2, and subsequent spinodal decomposition into two distinct B2 phases – one of which congruently disordered to bcc. However, an Al-Zr intermetallic has been experimentally observed as a product of spinodal decomposition when heat-treated at 950°C, along grain boundaries and intragranularly. The first part of this talk presents the identification, unequivocally, by convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) the point group, space group and structure of this phase. The second part of the talk details the B2/Al-Zr interface characteristics which have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. |
