Abstract Scope |
This study introduces the synthesis and magnetic characterization of two new quaternary MAB phases, CrMn₄SiB₂ and Mo₀.₈Mn₄.₂SiB₂, using a refined method that yields single-phase compounds. Both compounds crystallize in the tetragonal I4/mcm space group, with Mo exhibiting site preferences in Mo₀.₈Mn₄.₂SiB₂. Magnetic measurements reveal long-range ferromagnetic interactions with Curie temperatures (Tc) of 270 K for CrMn₄SiB₂ and 340 K for Mo₀.₈Mn₄.₂SiB₂. Saturation magnetizations (Ms) at 5 K are 4.732 μB/f.u. for CrMn₄SiB₂ and 5.726 μB/f.u. for Mo₀.₈Mn₄.₂SiB₂. Despite reductions in Tc and Ms compared to the parent Mn₅SiB₂ due to anti-site defects, the introduction of Mo or Cr induces magnetic hysteresis and intrinsic coercivities of 5.57 kA/m and 6.53 kA/m, respectively. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) calculations confirm in-plane anisotropy with higher MAE values than Mn₅SiB₂. This work pioneers a synthesis pathway for single-phase T2 quaternary materials and advances MAB-based permanent magnet research. |
