    | Abstract Scope |

MoO3 has recently been considered for targets to produce 99Mo/99mTc nuclear medicine by a nuclear reaction method. By utilizing the hot atom effect in and a large surface area of MoO3 target, 99Mo can be selectively dissolved in water. Among MoO3 phases, β-MoO3 has hydration capabilities and is expected to show a high throughput to extract 99Mo in water. Utilizing its large surface area,β-MoO3 nanosized powder was synthesized by a thermal evaporation method. From X-ray diffraction results, single phase β-MoO3 powder was successfully prepared. In scanning and transmission electron microscopy observations, the geometric mean diameter was 190 nm. Using this powder, neutron irradiation tests were carried out and 66% of the produced 99Mo was successfully recovered in water. |
