Abstract Scope |
The use of rare earth elements could potentially refine the microstructure and improve the mechanical property of aluminum alloys (AAs), and thus is of interest to the automotive industries. In this work, AA356 alloyed with 1wt.% of Cerium (Ce) was sand casted. Its microstructure and mechanical property were investigated and compared to the unmodified AA356 alloy. Solution heat treatment and artificial aging were explored to identify the optimal T6 heat treatment based on the peak hardness. Tensile testing was performed on both as-cast and heat-treated alloys. The grain structure and hypoeutectic microstructure were characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The alloying of Ce on the structure-property relationship of the AA356 alloy will be discussed. |
