Abstract Scope |
We report on neutron and synchrotron in-situ studies during the heating of materials subjected to severe plastic deformation. These studies reveal regimes of local microstructural recovery and residual stress relaxation, which contribute to increased hardness. Upon further heating, recrystallization occurs, expelling an abnormal amount of athermal vacancies into the lattice. This enhances diffusion and reaction kinetics, such as the precipitation of sequentially metastable and stable phases and the evolution of microstructures. This dramatic displacement of atoms creates a window for plastic and superplastic deformation, offering significant potential for advanced material properties. |
