Abstract Scope |
TerraPower, LLC is a nuclear innovation company currently working on the development of both the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE) and the Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR). An essential piece of both reactors is the chloride salt mixtures that are used as both the fuel carrier and the primary coolant. Due to the complex chemistry and material interactions inherent to chloride salts, a major developmental challenge is materials selection and compatibility. In this talk, TerraPower’s efforts toward materials selection will be discussed. Through static isothermal corrosion testing, multiple alloys have been tested for their compatibility in both coolant salt and uranium fuel salt mixtures. In addition, small-scale natural circulation testing platforms have been utilized to test over ten different alloys in the same salt mixtures. Finally, an isothermal pumped loop has been operated for 2000 hours to investigate the effects of higher flow speeds on erosion in coolant salts. |
