Abstract Scope |
High entropy ceramics (HECs) are a new class of materials with properties promising for nuclear reactor applications, including high strength and good high-temperature stability. In this talk, we will discuss challenges and opportunities for HECs in nuclear environments.
One major challenge in advancing discovery of HECs lies in accurately predicting their single-phase stability. We will discuss pros and cons of different approaches and introduce a new method for predicting phase stability of HECs based on ab initio calculations of free energies.
We will also present our recent experimental demonstration of chemical short-range (CSRO) order in HECs. CSRO was previously reported in metal high-entropy alloys, and only postulated in HECs based on atomistic simulations. We demonstrate the existence of CSRO in HECs using high resolution electron microscopy, supported by atomistic simulations, and we will discuss the impact of CSRO on mechanical response and radiation-induced swelling. |
