Abstract Scope |
Aluminium brazing sheets used in automotive heat exchanger applications (radiators, evaporators) comprise of core aluminium sheet and clad aluminium layers. These clad sheets are conventionally manufactured with hot cladding route which is an energy intensive process. This study discusses an innovative technology through energy efficient cold cladding process. Lab scale and pilot trials with cladding of AA3003 alloy with AA4045 alloy on one side and both sides show that there is significant improvement in quality of cold clad brazing sheet compared to conventional cladding process. Surface preparation effect on the quality bonding between the core and clad sheets is systematically studied. Excellent bonding achieved with minimum variation in the clad thickness (around 0.4% against 1% in hot clad). Impact of silicon particles and its size on brazability was studied and compared with hot cladded sheets. Fillet joints with the fin on both sides were investigated in commercial scale trials. |
