Abstract Scope |
During AM of alloys, solid-state thermal cycling (SSTC) occurs after the as-deposited material solidifies and until the end of the process. The thermodynamic forces occurring during SSTC can drive micromechanisms such as phase transformation, dislocation dynamics, etc., resulting in significant microstructure evolution. To better understand the role of SSTC on microstructure formation, operando synchrotron powder XRD experiments were performed during laser metal deposition (LMD) of Ti-6Al-4V at the PETRA III synchrotron, using a new miniature LMD machine developed by us. Experiments included tracking the microstructure evolution during building of a 30-layer wall with the focus being on the material deposited 2 mm above the substrate. In this talk, we will present the results of these experiments, specifically, evolution of average hkl peak position, broadening, intensity and phase transformations as a function of time and added layers. |
