Abstract Scope |
Dozens of molten salt reactor concepts are presently being developed in the United States and abroad, and it is not currently possible to evaluate which designs will eventually be successful, thermal or fast spectrum, fluoride or chloride salt, once through fuel cycle or closed fuel cycle. The central pillar of the current DOE-NE MSR program activities is developing fuel salt thermophysical and thermochemical information to enable confident modeling and simulation of reactor performance under both normal and accident conditions. Examples of the current research conducted across six national laboratories to determine the thermal properties of actinide-bearing molten salt systems proposed for fuels in advanced reactor designs will be presented and how those properties are necessary for both technology developers as well as regulatory body. In addition, advanced simulations combined with data science will be shown to demonstrate how accurately structural and thermochemical properties in these complex environments can be predicted. |
