Abstract Scope |
In polycrystalline materials, the character and topology of grain boundaries play a central role on ductility, fracture toughness, and corrosion performance. Here, we demonstrate the possibility of spatially tailoring both parameters in stainless steels during direct energy deposition additive manufacturing. Quantitative microstructure characterization (transmission electron microscopy and electron back-scattered diffraction) is coupled with thermodynamic calculations to reveal the role of the solid-state ferrite-to-austenite phase transformation on microstructure development. Leveraging the dependence of this phase transformation on the austenite and ferrite stabilizer ratio and cooling rate, we demonstrate the possibility of spatially controlling the grain boundary network via functional grading. |
