Abstract Scope |
The increasing need for functional materials to support high heat flux applications, coupled with the low technology readiness level (TRL) of the blown powder directed energy deposition method for bimetallic components, has revealed a range of challenges to overcome. Prominent among these challenges is the need to understand mixing of materials at the bimetallic interfaces to determine what methods and parameters form stronger, more durable joints to further extend the versatility of additive manufacturing into critical applications. In this study, samples were fabricated at several vendors with Inconel 625 deposited onto C-18150 (Cu-Cr-Zr) to form a bimetallic interface. Characterization of the interfaces was achieved through optical and electron microscopy, mechanical testing, and electron dispersion spectroscopy to understand diffusion and bulk mixing behaviors at the joint. A brief theoretical framework was then constructed to explain the resulting interfaces in the context of solidification and mixing mechanisms. |
