Abstract Scope |
Interfacial forces, including van der Waals (vdW) forces, are critically important for biomaterials and composites in which several materials or phases are joined. The mechanisms governing vdW forces and other physical and chemical interfacial interactions are highly complex, difficult to understand, and often considered too complex for quantitative modeling of interfacial phenomena. Current computational models (force fields) do not capture many of the conceptually and practically important subtleties. We developed and advanced experimental approaches based on force spectroscopy to provide practically relevant, quantitative measurements of interfacial forces. This approach can help to narrow the gap in understanding, and to calibrate and advance computational approaches for rigorous description of complex materials systems. |
