Abstract Scope |
MXenes, a novel family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, are noted for their exceptional properties and versatile applications, such as energy storage, water purification, and electromagnetic interference shielding. This study presents a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of MXenes to elucidate their environmental impacts throughout their lifecycle using the ecoinvent 3.9.1 database and OpenLCA software. Key stages analyzed include raw material extraction, MAX phase synthesis, HF and HCl etching processes, and post-etching treatments. Significant energy consumption during high-temperature treatments and centrifugation is highlighted. Strategies to reduce MXenes' environmental footprint, such as optimizing energy usage, implementing greener etching methods, and recycling chemicals, are explored. The study compares MXenes' environmental performance with other two-dimensional materials, providing a benchmark for sustainable design. These insights are crucial for guiding researchers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers in making informed decisions to mitigate the environmental impacts of MXene technologies. |
