Abstract Scope |
We introduce a new design of core structures with energy absorption capability and bend-locking mechanism. The versatility of these core structures allows them to be shaped into various freeform shapes beyond the typical planar structures. The core topology design enables local shape reconfigurations when compressed, demonstrating the energy dissipation capacity of core structures. When subjected to bending, the core topology can experience locking which improves stiffness and load-bearing capacity while preventing further bending deformations. These deformation mechanisms show promise for use in protective applications against compression, bending, and impacts. We consider two topologies, namely hexagon-triangle and square patterns, printed out of Onyx composite consisting of nylon and carbon fiber. We perform fabrication, experimentation, and simulation to understand the deformation mechanisms of the new composite core structures under compression and bending. |
