Abstract Scope |
In this study we investigated the capability of dimensionless numbers to describe process boundaries for single scan tracks of different alloys in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The track quality was evaluated based on melt pool morphology, such as melt pool width and depth, as well as melt pool stability. To describe melt pool morphology a combination of dimensionless enthalpy and Fourier number showed promising results for the investigated alloys (nickel base alloy, maraging steel and aluminium base alloy). The resulting relations can be used to adjust processing parameters locally, e.g. specific melt pool morphology for specific geometrical features. Furthermore, dimensionless numbers from fluid dynamics, such as Weber and Reynolds number, were used to characterize melt pool dynamics. The target of the performed work is to show that the use of dimensionless numbers can improve the understanding of fundamental mechanisms in LPBF common to different alloy systems. |
