Abstract Scope |
Conventional methods for manufacturing oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic steel fuel cladding tubes involve arduous multiple extrusion/pilgering and intermittent annealing steps. In this research, solid-state cold spray powder deposition process has been investigated for the manufacture of 14YWT ferritic steel fuel cladding tubes. The study demonstrates that cold spray deposition of microstructurally-tailoring the feedstock powders can be used to manufacture ODS steel cladding tubes with microstructure and properties comparable with those produced by the conventional methods. The approach can be an attractive option for the more rapid and cost-effective manufacturing of ODS steels cladding tubes for use in harsh environments of radiation and temperature in advanced nuclear reactors. The results of the process development and the performance of the ODS steel manufactured in a novel manner by cold spray process will be discussed. |
