Abstract Scope |
Red mud is an alkaline solid waste generated during the smelting process of bauxite, but its utilization rate is low, and there are still billions of tons of red mud that are not effectively treated every year. In this study, the molten salt electrodeoxidation process was employed to extract valuable elements from red mud. Based on the characterization results of the red mud, thermodynamic calculations of the reactants in the system were performed. The results showed that with a sufficiently high electrolysis voltage applied, the thermodynamic decomposition and reduction sequence of various oxides in the system were as follows: Fe2O3→Na2O→SiO2→TiO2→Al2O3→CaO. Due to the rapid electrolytic deoxidation of Fe2O3, most of the SiO2 in the cathode reacted with CaO in the molten salt to form Ca2SiO4, indicating that the electrochemical reduction process of SiO2 was SiO2→Ca2SiO4→Fe3Si/FeSi. |
