The microstructure evolution of Q&T low carbon steel during adiabatic shear deformation is poorly understood. This study aims to bridge this gap by integrating the microstructural analysis of specimens subjected to tensile and pure shear at different time scales. Baseline material characterization revealed that the microstructure is martensitic with a random crystallographic texture. Interrupted quasi-static tensile testing indicated that the material predominantly deforms by shear banding, with deformation starting to localize at 1.5% of macroscopic strain. Post-mortem analysis of projectile impact testing showed that the neighboring region of penetration sites undergoes substantial shear deformation. Within this region, the grain structure shows strong (110) and (111) textures perpendicular to the shearing direction. The grain size is also decreased by approximately 50%, and the aspect ratio doubles in the shear direction. Computational modeling is underway to clarify the cause of this behavior, enhancing the understanding of microstructure evolution under extreme conditions. |
