Abstract Scope |
In this talk we examine the kinetics of the diffusion-controlled phase transformation in group IVB and VB transition metal carbide metal ceramic multilayer composites (MCMs). These composites are able transform into monolithic monocarbides upon reaching temperatures sufficient for the activation of carbon diffusion. The phase transformation kinetics are dependent upon the shape of the carbon concentration profiles, the difference in carbon concentration at the equilibrium phase boundaries between the phases, the supersaturation of carbon in the monocarbide, and the carbon diffusion coefficients. The phase transformation characteristics are described using an effective diffusivity that is determined from direct numerical simulations, based on the finite element method, of the diffusion equation with moving boundaries. The effects of the composition dependent diffusivity, evaluated from DFT, and chemical potential on the effective diffusivity were also investigated using this model. |
