Abstract Scope |
Density and viscosity of molten salts are crucial thermophysical parameters that impact performance and safety of molten salt reactors (MSRs). MSRs use natural circulation for decay heat removal. This safety feature directly depends on variation of density with temperature (thermal expansivity) and on the viscosity of the salt in the loop.
ThorCon is planning to use NaF-BeF2-ThF4-UF4 as fuel salt and NaF-BeF2 as coolant salt for its MSR. No recent experimental data on density and viscosity of these salts is currently available in literature.
This talk will present the results of the comparative measurements of liquid density NaF-BeF2 and NaF-BeF2-UF4 by hydrostatic method between 450°C and 800°C and viscosity measurements of these two systems between 450°C and 600°C using a rotational viscometer. |
