Abstract Scope To achieve substantial reductions in CO2 emissions from steelmaking, it is crucial to investigate innovative processing methods for both primary and secondary raw materials. This paper offers a comprehensive overview of ongoing research based on the different process strategies: in the first step, the use of hydrogen for the production of direct reduced iron (DRI) via fluidized bed technologies. In the second step, the further processing of DRI to crude steel in the electric arc furnace (EAF) or to hot metal in the electric smelting furnace (ESF). The influence of iron ore and scrap quality and the therewith related consequences on the circular economy aspect will be discussed. Special attention will be paid to the role of tramp elements as well as slag properties, which essentially influence the final steel quality. Selected examples of fundamental research applying thermodynamic-kinetic approaches as well as experimental investigations will be presented.
