Abstract Scope |
Fatigue and dwell-fatigue properties are critical for many usages of dual phase titanium alloys. Basal twist grain boundaries (BTGBs) were recently identified as a preferential microstructure configuration for the initiation of cracks. In this presentation, we first provide evidence of the nucleation of main fatigue and dwell-fatigue cracks at BTGBs for a range of alloys and microstructures. Complementary TEM analysis of dislocation structures in the vicinity of microcracks is reported to discuss mechanisms associated with the formation of initiation facets. In situ testing in a SEM was combined with HR-DIC to clarify the progressive transition from localized slip to cracking at BTGBs. Insights into the mechanisms involved in BTGB cracking are finally discussed. |
