Abstract Scope |
Molybdenum is a common solid-solution strengthener in Nickel based superalloys. The observation of dislocation pile-ups in the random matrix phase of these alloys has previously suggested the presence of short-range order. Within the Ni-Mo system, the Ni4Mo binary contains an order-disorder transition at 870 °C; from the disordered fcc solid solution to the body centred tetragonal D1a phase (upon prolonged annealing below 870 °C). The nature of any short-range order (SRO) within the solid solution remains uncertain and the ordering transition mechanism is not known.
To elucidate both the type of SRO within the solid solution and the ordering mechanism an in-situ heat treatment X-ray total scattering experiment was conducted on the I15-1 (XPDF beamline) at Diamond Light Source. In this talk we will present these data, and the subsequent analysis carried out using Reverse Monte Carlo methods to provide insight into the SRO structures within the Ni4Mo system. |
