Abstract Scope |
Increasing the silicon (Si) limit above 0.2 wt.% in Inconel 718 can allow the use of cheaper scrap with higher Si, benefiting costs and the environment. In the present study, the effect of Si addition on the delta phase precipitation in Inconel 718 and the associated mechanical properties have been quantitatively analyzed using thermodynamic calculations and experimental analysis. Microstructure analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements indicate that an increase in Si content leads to a slight reduction in the volume fraction of the delta phase along with the formation of the laves phase, resulting in an overall increase in the volume fraction of the secondary phases, which correlates with the thermodynamic calculations. Furthermore, alloys with higher Si concentrations exhibit higher hardness and yield strength but lower ductility, which can be attributed to the increased volume fraction of the secondary phases. |
