Abstract Scope |
High strength 7000-series aluminum alloys have potential application in anti-intrusion components within automotive structures. These alloys have limited room temperature formability, but have been shown to exhibit increased formability using warm and hot forming processes. Recent work has demonstrated that warm formability can be increased using under-aged (or pre-aged) starting tempers and that good final strength can be achieved following automotive paint bake thermal cycles. Such processing routes avoid the need for batch aging cycles, as is often the case, for example, following hot die quenching or W-temper forming operations.
This talk examines the constitutive and formability response of two 7000-series aluminum alloys, including recent experiments using a newly-developed automated fast-forming cell featuring in situ high speed DIC strain measurement. The formability of these alloys was characterized in terms of forming limit curves (FLCs) under warm rapid processing conditions. In addition to formability, the interface condition between the tooling and work piece, generally characterized in terms of the friction and heat transfer coefficients, has been characterized experimentally and implemented within warm forming simulations.
Constitutive models and formability criteria appropriate for warm forming of the pre-aged tempers are presented, that account for the influence of deformation rate, warm forming temperature and heating rate to forming temperature. In situ aging during heating and warm forming is also considered. These models are implemented within a number of finite element codes and comparisons to validation experiments will be presented |
