Abstract Scope |
Friction stir welding for railroad applications gains more and more relevance in the past few years, specially in Europe. Applications can be divided in superstructure applications like roofs and walls or substructure ones in the lower part of the waggon. Components in this area are usually much larger in wall thickness and highly fatigue loaded.
One of these new applications - a headstock - will be shown in more detail in this presentation. This includes design, process development and manufacturing sequence for FSW and mechanical machining. Manufacturing involves six FSW set-ups with weld penetrations up to 27 mm and two intermediate machining operations of a part with a final weight of 1.5 tonnes.
