Abstract Scope |
Technical textiles are fabrics that are designed for non-decorative purposes with specific functional properties such as antimicrobial, antistatic, flame retardant, and with improved UV, thermal, chemical, and odor resistance as well as tenacity. Medical textile is a branch of technical textiles focusing on applications on healthcare including those for prevention, care, and hygiene. They encompass many materials including fibers, yarns, or fabrics - non-woven, woven, braided, as well as knitted. Chemical and physical alterations of fiber architectures including introduction of conductors and sensors, the employment of functional finishes, and the production of stimuli-driven materials are methods for developing new medical textiles. This presentation covers the current state of medical textiles and speculates on future uses including the presenters’ work. Role of 3D printing and polymeric textile filaments in fabrication of medical textiles are also included within the scope of this presentation, along with electronic tattoos, artificial and robot skins. |
