Abstract Scope |
In recent years, there has been an active movement to replace some of the materials used in transportation equipment with light metals in order to reduce their weight. However, joining magnesium alloys, which are the lightest of all practical metals, to steel is difficult because of the low deformability of magnesium alloys and their lower boiling and melting points compared to steel. Therefore, solid-phase welding is considered to be effective for welding between magnesium alloys and steel.
In this study, magnesium alloy sheet (AZ31) and steel (SPCC or High tensile steel) sheet were welded by magnetic pulse welding (MPW), varying the gap length and discharge energy. Interfacial microstructure was examined by using SEM and TEM. The welding properties of the lap joint sheet was also evaluated by tensile test. We confirmed that sound bonding between magnesium alloys and steel sheets was achieved by MPW. |
