Abstract Scope |
Mechanical properties and microstructure of QT 17-4+ stainless steel, additively manufactured (AM) using directed energy deposition (DED), were evaluated and compared with solution annealed (SA) wrought 17-4PH steel. QT 17-4+ is explicitly designed for additive manufacturing with the goal of not requiring additional heat treatments after AM to enhance the mechanical properties. The microhardness of AM QT 17-4+ was found comparable to H900 heat treated 17-4PH steel, and 23% higher than the SA 17-4PH steel, due to the formation of epsilon carbides. Both the QT 17-4+ powder and the AM QT 17-4+ steel were characterized by X-ray diffraction. A decrease in the percentage of austenite was observed after AM, mainly due to the high cooling rate during the DED process. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were used to further characterize the microstructure and distribution of columnar and equiaxed grains relative to the build direction. |
