Abstract Scope |
I have been fortunate to have had an interaction of over 10 years with Prof. Banerjee, where we have been involved in several problems that have the common theme where a metallurgical problem of an applied interest has been probed fundamentally using a combination of modeling and experiments. Some of these have led to important developments and spawned new research directions in my group. I will provide two such examples, one of a fundamental nature, and the other more applied. The first problem is related to eutectic solidification, where I will highlight the role of solid-solid interfacial energy anisotropy in biasing the microstructure formation during two- and three-phase growth using a combination of phase-field modeling and controlled directional solidification experiments. The second problem involves the identification of a parameter space for achieving single crystal deposition through laser-based direct energy deposition, using a combination of process—microstructure models calibrated with experiments. |
