Abstract Scope |
In High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)-transmission, increase of efficiency requires further innovation of the insulation materials, capable of withstanding the extreme electrical and thermal stresses under operation. Incorporation of nanoparticles in the polymer matrix of HVDC-insulation material such as those made from metal oxides have previously been established to increase the overall performance of the insulation material but are problematic due to their production cost and availability. This research establishes that carbon 0D-nanoparticles (CNPs) can be used to achieve similar effects, while being cheaper and available in the volumes required for HVDC-systems. CNPs are incorporated into a polyethylene matrix and evaluated for electrical performance and characterized using advanced techniques involving leakage current measurements and electron microscopy. The findings establish CNPs as a sustainable, high-performance solution for HVDC-insulation, leading to reduction of energy losses, improvement of material reliability, and in extension enabling the transition to greener energy sources. |
