Abstract Scope |
Light materials are of paramount importance with increasing industry adaption interest to reduce the weight of constructions and vehicles to ultimately minimize fuel consumption and emission. High strength aluminum additive manufacturing yields enormous material savings with only minor compromise in strength. However, despite superior strength-to-weight ratios of high strength aluminum alloys, they are underrepresented in the manufacturing industry due to inferior weldability and crack susceptibility. In this work, Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing is used to print nanoparticle enhanced high strength aluminum alloys, resulting in crack-free components with exceptional grain morphology and superior mechanical strength properties. Grain structure and solidification behavior of high strength aluminum are successfully controlled and manipulated by nanoparticles in the WAAM process, which solve long-standing problems of grain growth during repeated WAAM depositions and anisotropic materials response challenges, leading to homogenously distributed fine grain sizes with isotropic material characteristics throughout the different layers of the deposited structure. |
