Abstract Scope |
The Department of the Navy is working diligently to advance manufacturing techniques, both for maintenance and new design. Using design for additive (DFAM) complex internal geometries may be created. The need for rigorous evaluation of parts to facilitate certification is still required. The DON has extensive experience in detecting flaws in welds. Wire DED is a type of additive welding but the layer wise buildup and variable cooling, leads to defect morphology and geometric conditions that challenge even the best inspection methods. Generally, as design complexity increases NDE inspect capability decreases. This creates unique issues associated with nondestructive inspection and quality assurance. This talk will discuss applicable NDE techniques to detect manufacturing anomalies and service-induced flaws. In addition, we will discuss bigger strategic thinking regarding Design of Additive for Inspectability. The topic is relatively new and needs much attention to further the use of AM in critical applications.
