Abstract Scope |
Gd5(Si,Ge)4 and La(Fe,Si)13 compounds show a promising magnetocaloric effect for magnetic refrigeration applications. Their magnetocaloric effects are sensitive to annealing conditions for synthesis of bulk material. To understand this sensitivity, we carried out in situ X-ray diffraction analysis and high resolution transmission electron microscopic studies. It was found that both compounds have experienced nanoscale phase separation during material synthesis. High resolution imaging shows that the phase-separated mixture in each compound has a coherent interface. This finding can account for the sensitivity of the properties of the two compounds to synthesis conditions. In addition, the nanoscale phase separation in the La(Fe,Si)13 compound can account for negative thermal hysteresis that is rare to our best knowledge. The work is financially supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (grant no. 51831003). |
