| Abstract Scope |
Since the inception of the CALPHAD method, models; functions for end-member phases, including the quantities of the pure elements; and the descriptions of the systems have been constantly evolving and re-assessments are needed constantly. If the proper models would have been chosen at the beginning of an assessment some of these re-assessments would not be necessary. In the past frequently only experience from working with a system, incorporating its description into a multicomponent database and expanding the descriptions to include other phase properties, such as diffusion mobilities or molar volume, revealed shortcomings of a particular model. However, a thorough analysis of the phase properties is the basis for finding the appropriate model and will reduce the need for re-assessments. Examples why insufficient model descriptions limit the applicability beyond the original assessment will be shown and strategies for the evaluation of the model requirements will be presented. |
