Abstract Scope |
There is a continuous quest for effective recycling method for the polymer laminated aluminum packaging (PLAP) materials because the multi-materials intrinsic behaviors create complexities during the processing of cast-off materials. Thermal disengagement technology (TDT) offers complete recycling of all the materials with the PLAP without the traditional smelting of secondary aluminum (Al). Selected PLAP materials were thermally decomposed at 450°C to 650°C for 5-30 min. ~99% pure Al is recycled from the PLAP materials by the TDT without any metal loss. The recycled Al was further processed to use in various industrial applications, such as Al as a deoxidizing agent in steelmaking and Al microparticles in additive manufacturing. Released hydrocarbon gases could be utilized as the fuel gas (CH4, H2) upon further processing and the heat energy for preheating in another work cycle. This recycling technique offers sustainable recycling of multi-materials food packaging into value-added resources. |
